How to Build an Outdoor Kitchen Grill Island

A grill island is a stunning way to elevate any outdoor living space. It provides a dedicated space for food preparation and doubles as the centerpiece of any outdoor kitchen. However, there are several key points to consider before even selecting a grill.

The video below from Techo‑Bloc walks you through how to build a modern BBQ grill island. In this overview, we’ll cover:

  • What goes into planning an outdoor kitchen island
  • Why choosing the right materials is critical
  • How to install masonry correctly
  • Safety and cooking performance considerations

Building the Grill Island Base

Every structure needs proper support, and an outdoor grill island is no different. In this project, Techo‑Bloc starts with a rigid, porous concrete pad. It’s designed to support masonry, appliances, and countertops for the long haul.

The slab is covered with a skim coat before installation begins. From there, the first course of Techo‑Bloc Borealis wall stone is laid. After that, they laid seven courses of Techo-Bloc Graphix wall stone to build the body of the island.

Pre‑planning plays a major role at this stage. In the video, Techo‑Bloc saved several hours in the field by planning the layout in advance and making a single cut.

Choosing Stone for Outdoor Kitchens

    Techo-Bloc Graphix Wall

Long Island’s seasonal temperature swings need materials that can handle rain, snow, ice, and heatwaves. Techo‑Bloc’s masonry wall systems are built with this in mind. Their design and durability make them a great choice for outdoor grill islands across New York.

In the video, Techo-Bloc uses two types of wall stone products:

  • Techo‑Bloc Borealis Wall – This extra-long wall stone is ideal for large spaces and comes in a wood-grain texture
  • Techo‑Bloc Graphix Wall – This modern wall stone has an in-and-out profile and comes in smooth or split-faced textures

Both products are designed for freestanding structures. That makes them an excellent choice for grill islands, bars, and other outdoor kitchen features. They are also both self-bridging. That means you don’t need steel lintels or angle iron to support the countertop’s weight. Eliminating the need for extra support means the project can be completed in less time for less money.

Applying Concrete Adhesive

When building an outdoor kitchen island, it’s essential to use an adhesive designed for exterior masonry. In this build, Techo‑Bloc’s Flexlock Ultra Performance Concrete Adhesive is used to bond the wall stone units.

The adhesive is applied in the direction of the desired airflow. This supports good air flow around appliances and vent openings. This step is key for ventilation, performance, and safety.

Planning Grill Island Appliances, Venting & Storage Placement

Deciding what goes in your outdoor grill island is also important. This includes openings for grills and other cooking tools. It also includes access doors for propane tanks and storage. In the video, Techo-Bloc also installed a Pave Tool vent system. This vents natural gas and controls condensation. It also helps with oxygen flow, allowing for a nice, rich flame.

Adding an Outdoor Kitchen Counter

The final step in any outdoor grill island project is installing the countertop. Popular choices are natural stone, porcelain, and other materials meant for outdoor use. The countertop templates can be customized to fit any cooking needs.

Grill islands function as both cooking and entertaining spaces. That makes the choice of countertop important. The counter often doubles as a food preparation and seating area. This is especially true when incorporated into a larger outdoor kitchen layout.

Looking to Build a Barbecue Island on Long Island?

Designing an outdoor grill island goes far beyond choosing a grill. Wall texture, scale, and layout all affect how the space looks, feels, and functions over time.
