How to Install Masonry Wall Bases

Masonry walls serve many functions in a landscape. They can serve as seating walls around a pool or fire pit, or even as the foundation for the fire pit itself. Masonry walls make great outdoor room dividers to break up large spaces into smaller, more intimate areas. Retaining walls do the same work, but on a three-dimensional level, dealing with difficult slope changes, reducing run-off and soil erosion, and adding multi-level garden rooms. Tie in pillars to the walls for an added flourish or to support other decorative structures like outdoor lighting, pergolas, or planting urns. Masonry walls also form the base of outdoor living features like kitchens, bars, grill islands, pizzas ovens, and fountains and can create cozy outdoor rooms like fire pit areas and dining areas.

With so many structures and uses for masonry walls, it’s vital to remember the most important part of building them: they must be 100% level and their bases must be stable. Without proper leveling, pillars become crooked, grill islands fracture, and retaining walls lose strength and eventually fail.

This 4-part masonry wall video series from Unilock explains how to properly excavate, add and compact base materials, and level wall units and landscape features.
